Games in the Classroom: Using Tech to Learn

Games are a powerful medium that can be used in the classroom to teach concepts, motivate students, and measure learning outcomes. Teachers should know the benefits of gaming so they can create engaging lessons for their students.

1. Gaming is a great way to keep students engaged in learning.

Gaming is a great way to keep students engaged in learning. The visual, auditory, and tactile components of gaming engage the senses more than traditional methods like lectures or textbooks. If you’ve ever been pulled away from your phone by an urgent message during class (or distracted at work), then you know how hard it is to break free from it. Pedagogy that incorporates gaming can help students stay engaged in the course material and be more attentive.

Gaming motivates students to learn by providing a new form of engagement,  a sense of ownership over their learning experience, and an opportunity for mastery.

2. Gamification can be used in the classroom to motivate students and make lessons more interactive.

Students are more engaged and motivated when they’re playing a game than sitting in an auditorium listening to a lecture. When you gamify your lesson or course content, it becomes interactive for students—they want to learn because learning helps them within the game and engages their natural competitiveness.

Students can be given narrative and gaming elements to make the material come alive. For example, when learning about world history, students could take on a role of an ancient traveler in the period they’re studying, collect items during activities that are related to what they’re learning in class — and earn points for correct answers.

3. Teachers should use games that allow for different levels of difficulty so all learners have an opportunity to succeed.

The games that are most successful in the classroom will be different for every student.  To stay motivated when playing these types of games, students should have opportunities to explore and interact with their environment while still having goals and challenges set out before them.

This type of gaming experience is called Gamification: making something into a game so it's more fun or challenging than usual. There are many benefits to this approach; including motivation (students might enjoy themselves more), engagement (they'll spend less time zoning out) and it increases the efficacy of lessons.

4. Games can promote teamwork and collaboration in the classroom

Games are a fun way for learners to cooperate and work together, so students must have the opportunity to play games in class. Games can also promote teamwork outside of school hours because they can be played with others who may not attend the same school.

Gamification is the process of using game thinking and game design techniques to increase the efficacy of lessons.

Games in the classroom are a powerful way to teach content and measure learning outcomes. Teachers should be aware of how games can enhance lessons, motivate learners, or promote teamwork--both within school hours and outside of them too. Gamification is an important process for valuable education strategies because it increases the efficacy of lessons using game design.

I loved it when you said that this type of gaming experience is called Gamification: making something into a game so it's more fun or challenging than usual. My daughter has been doing great in her online school. I heard her mentioning the history simulation app that is going to be used in her lessons. I will share this post for her to learn where to find Imperialism History Game online.

My daughter is a visual learner, so I love the idea of Game-based learning. It is very engaging and increases the focus of active kids.

If we confine our kids to just learn through textbooks and lectures, how in the world will they be able to know that learning can actually be a fun activity. I totally agree with your point of view here. Games are very important to help your child build confidence and to participate in team-building.

Great blog! Rightly said. Students are driven to study, pay attention, and engage in assigned tasks when they are playing games. Games encourage students to take ownership of their own learning and to work as a team. They may also be an excellent tool for classroom management and motivation.
